FAQ
Common questions
What is a formal request letter?
A letter asking an organisation for something — a document, a permission, a change — written so the request, the reason and what you need back are all on one page.
What format should it follow?
The recipient and their organisation at the top, the date, a one-line subject, the request in the first paragraph, the reason in the second, and a polite close with your name and contact.
Who should it be addressed to?
A named person or a named post — "The Principal", "The Branch Manager", "Head of Human Resources". "To whomsoever it may concern" is for certificates, not for requests.
How long should it be?
Short. Most requests fit in three paragraphs; the longer a request letter gets, the easier it is to put aside.
Can I use it for a college or a bank?
Yes. The organisation fields take any name and address, and the ready-made wording covers requests for documents and for permission as well as a general request.
Is it free, and is there a watermark?
Two letters a month are free, with no watermark on any plan.
